Since French nouns (for people as well as things) can be either masculine or feminine in gender and singular or plural in number,it is necessary to know a few generalities about the gender and number of nouns and the appropriate articles that precede them.

La famille(Family)
In France the minimum age for getting married is fifteen for a woman and eighteen for a man. The average number of children per family is 1.86. Most young people are educated near their homes. They do not leave home when they go to college but often stay home (à la maison) until they get married. French family
members therefore tend to remain in close contact.
